But first ..be sure to set an extra plate at your table this Memorial Day as an honorary plate to remember all those that gave their lives for our freedom in the USA\u2026and also to honor those in service they deserve this day of honor and more!<br \/>\nThis recipe is known as ferratelle because that is the traditional name of the cookies that most call pizzelle\u2026but ferratelle is what they are called in Abruzzo and this recipe is from Abruzzo and uses saffron from L\u2019Aquila..if you can\u2019t find saffron from L\u2019Aquila Italy..use whatever saffron you find\u2026not quite the same but similar\u2026<br \/>\nYou do need a pizzelle iron or electric pizzelle maker to cook these wafer like gems.<br \/>\n<strong>WIN A FREE BOOK-&nbsp; DO you know why they call these cookies \u2018 Ferratelle\u2019 in Abruzzo??..the correct answer wins a copy of my latest book The Basic Art of Coffee just comment here with your answers and your emails and you will be notified..first correct answer wins!<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.marialiberati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/cov-page-001.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"cov-page-001\" alt=\"cov-page-001\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.marialiberati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/cov-page-001_thumb.jpg?resize=244%2C187&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"244\" height=\"187\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong><em>Ferratelle allo Zafferano<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n400 gr flour<br \/>\n1 small envelope of saffron from L\u2019Aquila,Italy<br \/>\n1\/4 cup sugar<br \/>\n2 tablespoons Aurum Liqueur<br \/>\nextra virgin olive oil<br \/>\nIn a small dish blend the saffron with olive oil just until saffron is melted. Set aside.&nbsp; Sift flour in another bowl, add in eggs, blend by hand or with electric mixer. Then add in the saffron with olive oil, sugar and a few drops of Aurum liqueur. The dough has to be mixed till it is smooth and well blended. Then roll the dough into two balls.&nbsp; cut off a piece and make a cylinder of about 1 inch in diameter. Cut off pieces that are about 1 1\/4 inch in length. Heat electric pizzelle maker and follow directions for use.<br \/>\n\u2018Once upon a time\u2019 (or as we say \u201cC\u2019era una volta\u201d) pizzelle or ferratelle were made with a single wafer&nbsp; iron, cooked over a hot stove.
