{"id":151,"date":"2008-01-05T10:33:37","date_gmt":"2008-01-05T10:33:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marialiberati.com\/blog2\/?p=151"},"modified":"2008-01-05T10:33:37","modified_gmt":"2008-01-05T10:33:37","slug":"buona-la-befana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marialiberati.com\/freshsite\/2008\/01\/05\/buona-la-befana\/","title":{"rendered":"Buona La Befana!!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>And the Holidays continue here (in Italy) we are now coming to our last Holiday\u00a0of the Christmas season- the Epiphany or La Befana..<br \/>\n\u00a0La Befana, the good Christmas witch will fill your stockings with candies and fruits and little presents but if you have been bad she is more likely to fill your stocking with &#8216;carbone&#8217; or coal.<br \/>\nAs I have been continuing with\u00a0excerpts from my upcoming book<br \/>\nThe Basic Art of Italian Cooking-Holidays\u00a0&amp; Special\u00a0Occasions\u00a0(to be released in 2008)<br \/>\nHere is the chapter on\u00a0 La Befana;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">I have had an unbelievable holiday season at my grandfather&#8217;s vineyard in <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Italy<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>. While in the <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">USA<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, the Holiday Season is over. We can remain basking in the glow of the <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Holiday<\/st1:place> spirit for one last day.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span>\u00a0<\/span>I still have one more holiday to celebrate- La Befana. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u201cLa Befana e propria brava\u201d (<span>\u00a0 <\/span>roughly translated means: \u201cthe Befana is a wonderful person) said <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\">Sofia<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> as all listened intently. We had just finished a sumptuous afternoon <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Holiday<\/st1:place> dinner. <span>\u00a0<\/span>It all began with a traditional Italian wedding soup, followed by homemade ravioli filled with fresh ricotta and spinach mixture topped with a homemade tomato sugo (sauce). And as if that wasn\u2019t enough..next came roasted chicken with roasted potatoes,<span>\u00a0 <\/span>insalata russa (similar to an American potato salad- potatoes, peas, chopped carrots, mayonnaise) then came the cheese plate with locally made bread, then the fresh fruit and nut plate then dessert-oh did I forget to mention the sparkling white Prosecco.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Sofia continued recounting the story about how she had grown up overnight because La Befana came in the middle of the night to her room and took her pacifier and left her a stocking full of gifts-as it is customary to do for the Epiphany or La Befana<span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Sofia is 3 \u00bd yrs old and her mother has been thinking of a way to get her to stop using her pacifier.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">This holiday had come with perfect timing. <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Sofia <\/st1:place><\/st1:city>was happy because she had a delightful story to tell at dinner and had gotten a stocking full of gifts. She knew that mamma and nonna were happy that she would no longer be with pacifier as well<\/font><\/p>\n<p><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">La Befana, (The Christmas Witch) or The Epiphany is celebrated in <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Italy<\/st1:country-region> and throughout <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Europe<\/st1:place>on January 6th. La Befana rides through the night sky on her broom carrying presents and sweets for children<\/font><\/p>\n<p><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Her name is derived from the celebration of <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/05504c.htm\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The Epiphany<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\">, which is the &#8220;<\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crivoice.org\/cyepiph.html\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">climax of the Christmas season and the Twelve Days of Christmas&#8230;usually counted from December 25th through January 5th<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\">,&#8221; culminating in a feast and celebration on January 6th.<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Being a fine housekeeper, and having a broom with which to ride, some say she will sweep the floor before she leaves. The family, in anticipation of her arrival, typically sets out a small glass of wine and few morsels of food for their Christmas Witch.<\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">La Befana is typically portrayed as a witch, only she is smiling and has a bag full of candy and gifts for good girls and boys. And like Santa Claus, she leaves behind &#8220;coal&#8221; for those who are bad. Except often, it&#8217;s a piece of hard rock candy instead!<\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">There is a poem about La Befana, which is well-known throughout <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Italy<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>:<\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">La Befana vien di notte (La Befana comes at night)<br \/>\nCon le scarpe (With the broken shoes)<br \/>\nTutte rotte vien vestita (She comes dressed in)<br \/>\nAlla romana (Peasant Roman style)<br \/>\nViva, Viva La Befana!
