The earliest of the <a class=\"zem_slink freebase\/guid\/9202a8c04000641f80000000002a0c9b\" title=\"Colonies in antiquity\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colonies_in_antiquity\">Greek colonies<\/a> was founded in 735 B.C. and the latest about 580 B.C. Today there are many of the remnants found of the great cities of this time. Many of which are rumble and debris that give evidence of the cities existence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\u00a0The Greeks, who were known to worship the Greek Gods, celebrated their rituals while building temples that partially exist today. Given the history, Sicily with the many wars and the land being subjected to earthquakes, still has temples that are admired by tourists. <a class=\"zem_slink freebase\/guid\/9202a8c04000641f800000000005981c\" title=\"Segesta\" rel=\"geolocation\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=37.9333333333,12.8333333333&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=37.9333333333,12.8333333333 (Segesta)&amp;t=h\">Segesta<\/a>, Appollonion, and Concordia are temples oftened visited.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\u00a0Seguesta was on the northwest mountainous coast of Sicily and was near the city of the Sicilian Elymi 2000 feet above the sea. The <a class=\"zem_slink freebase\/guid\/9202a8c04000641f8000000000068c9e\" title=\"Doric order\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doric_order\">Doric<\/a> dedicated to Aphrodite, is the only building left and stands among the hills with its columns that were never finished most likely due to the war between Segesta and <a class=\"zem_slink freebase\/guid\/9202a8c04000641f8000000000059d51\" title=\"Selinunte\" rel=\"geolocation\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=37.5833333333,12.8166666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=37.5833333333,12.8166666667 (Selinunte)&amp;t=h\">Selinus<\/a>. The city was abandoned in the <a class=\"zem_slink freebase\/guid\/9202a8c04000641f8000000000025e1e\" title=\"Middle Ages\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middle_Ages\">Middle Ages<\/a>, but the temple is one of the best preserved in Sicily.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\u00a0In southwestern Sicily, by the Selinus River, stands the ruins of seven ancient Doric temples. The city of which was known as Selinus. The largest of the temples, the Apollonion, dedicated to Apollo, is 371 feet in length and was unfinished due to the take over by the <a class=\"zem_slink freebase\/guid\/9202a8c04000641f800000000000f2ae\" title=\"Carthage\" rel=\"geolocation\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=36.8530555556,10.3230555556&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=36.8530555556,10.3230555556 (Carthage)&amp;t=h\">Carthaginians<\/a> in 409. Because of the wars with Segesta the city never regained its strength to prosper.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">The Valley of the Temples in <a class=\"zem_slink freebase\/guid\/9202a8c04000641f800000000005a24a\" title=\"Agrigento\" rel=\"geolocation\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=37.3166666667,13.5833333333&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=37.3166666667,13.5833333333 (Agrigento)&amp;t=h\">Agrigento<\/a>, on the southern shore of Sicily, was built on the crest of several hills. These buildings have survived 2,500 years despite earthquakes, volcanoes, and wars. There were fifteen temples built by the Greeks in Agrigento. One of which was dedicated to Zeus and another to Hercules, but the only temple left standing is the Temple of Concordia. The temple was preserved when it was rebuilt into a church in the 6<sup>th<\/sup> century A.D.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\u00a0Although the beauty of the past surrounds Sicily, the evidence of the destruction by wars, earthquakes, and famine are apparent. Imagine the ancient times of prosperity when the cities were filled with people of all classes who lived, worked and breathed.
