Fresh dill complements any salad; and what is\u00a0tomato sauce without fresh basil or\u00a0guacamole without garden fresh cilantro? What about blending herbs to make a new, distinct flavor to add to your delectable dishes?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">Combinations of herbs and spices can be concocted to make even the simplest vegetables soar with flavor. Herb combos can be made with or without salt, depending on your preference. In fact, mixing salt with spices become <em>herbed salts<\/em>\u2014something you can sprinkle onto any meal instead of plain old salt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">When making an herb mixture, there are 2 important things to remember:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">Measurements are key\u2014too much of one herb will overpower the other flavors in the mixture. Start with small amounts and add more to taste.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">Use herbs that will complement one another in the same dish, yet don\u2019t be afraid to try some unfamiliar combinations. You might come across a blend that could become a family favorite!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">It is no secret that <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Oregano\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oregano\">oregano<\/a>, basil, rosemary and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Thyme\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thyme\">thyme<\/a> are classic <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Italian cuisine\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italian_cuisine\">Italian<\/a> herbs. They season most Italian dishes with a special zeal. However, have you ever tried adding some different spices or herbs to your <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Tomato sauce\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tomato_sauce\">spaghetti sauce<\/a>? Cilantro may not be a typical Italian herb, but chop some up and add it to your sauce for an extra punch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><strong>Making herbed salt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">Try this: Mix 1 cup of coarse <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Sea salt\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sea_salt\">sea salt<\/a> with 2 tsp each: <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Dill\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dill\">dill seed<\/a>, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Coriander\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coriander\">coriander<\/a> seed, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Cumin\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cumin\">cumin<\/a> seed, and whole <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Black pepper\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_pepper\">peppercorns<\/a>. Pour this mixture into a clear \u201cpepper mill\u201d and you now have some freshly ground salt to <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Spice Girls\" rel=\"homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thespicegirls.com\/\">spice<\/a> up your meals every time. This also makes a great gift for the food lovers on your list who are otherwise impossible to buy for.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">Each herb and spice has its own distinct flavor and when you blend it with other herbs and spices, it adds or changes the essence. Be creative, but remember to add herbs and spices in small steps.
