                                                <\/span>Basilica di San Lorenzo di Firenze<\/st1:place><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Basilica di San Lorenzo is located in Florence<\/st1:City> Italy<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.  <\/span>It is one of the largest churches in Florence<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>.  <\/span>It is located at the center of Florence<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>’s main market district.  <\/span>It is the burial place of all the principal members of the Medici family from Cosimo il Vecchio to Cosimo III.<\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

When it was consecrated in 393, it stood outside Florence<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>’s walls.  <\/span>For 300 years, it was Florence<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>’s cathedral.  <\/span>Later, the official seat of the bishop was transferred to Santa Reparata.  <\/span>San Lorenzo<\/st1:place> was also the parish church of the Medici family.<\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Giovanni di Bicci de’Medici offered to finance a new church in 1419.  <\/span>This would replace the 11th<\/sup> century Romanesque church.<\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

About 1450, Filippo Brunelleschi, architect, was commissioned to design the new building.  <\/span>The new building with alterations was not finished until after Brunelleschi was dead.<\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Basilica di San Lorenzo<\/st1:place> is considered a hallmark in the development of Italian Renaissance architecture.<\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Basilica is in the same area as other important architectural works:  <\/span>the old Sacristy by Brunelleschi, the Laurentian library by Michaelangelo, the new sacristy based on the designs of Michaelangelo and the Medici Chapels by Matteo Nigetti.<\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n
