Most cultures have a tradition with certain spices, herbs and flavorings. Unfortunately, in the American kitchen- ketchup, salt and\/or pepper is what is used to enhance foods flavor. But spices and herbs are not only important to enhance your foods but also have many health benefits.<\/div>\n<p><strong>Ginger<\/strong><br \/>\nIn the 19th century it was extremely popular to keep a shaker of ginger on the counter of pubs in Britain so that patrons could shake some into their drinks. That is how famous ginger ale originated.<strong><br \/>\nCardamom<\/strong><br \/>\nCardamom is an inportant ingredient used to make Arabic coffee. Added to ground coffee before brewing, it gives a tempting sweet flavor to coffee. In Scandinavian countries, especially Sweden, cardamom is as popular as cinnamon in America. It is traditionally added to breads and pastries.<br \/>\n<strong>Cloves<\/strong><br \/>\nThis highly fragrant spice, grown mostly in Indonesia, has been used for thousands of years. It is believed that the Chinese had to put a few cloves in their mouth to sweeten their breaths if they wanted to approach the Emperor. Nowadays most of the crops are used to produce clove<br \/>\ncigarettes.<br \/>\n<strong>Coriander<\/strong><br \/>\nCoriander is known as one of the first spices used by mankind. It has references in Sanskrit (1500 BC) and the Old Testament. Nowadays its use is very diverse, from Indian curries and gin to American cigarettes and sausages.<br \/>\n<strong>Marjoram<\/strong><br \/>\nMarjoram is a delicate sweet spice with a slightly bitter undertone. Ancient Greeks and Romans considered it to be a symbol of happiness. It was believed that if marjoram grew on the grave of a dead person, he would enjoy eternal bliss.
