Those who enjoy their daily cup of joe in the morning along with some ice cream will love to partake in National Coffee Milkshake Day! The simplicity of combining your favorite flavor coffee blended with some ice cream is on a hot July day can really hit the spot. Coffee has a history that dates back to Kaldi, a 9th-century Ethiopian goatherd. Milkshakes in comparison are much younger with a history only dating back to 1885. One could safely assume that it was sometime between now and then [1885], when someone got the genius idea to mix the two and get the creamy caffeinated dessert we enjoy today. Coffee-flavored milkshakes are made with brewed coffee, instant coffee, coffee-flavored ice cream, coffee syrup, or coffee liqueur.
Make the perfect shake
The key to a good coffee milkshake is cold brewed coffee. Some of the advantages of using cold brewed coffee include that it has slightly less caffeine (so the milkshakes are more kid-friendly), it’s less acidic and not as bitter. Cold brewing coffee tends to bring out different flavors in the bean that can’t be detected when heat is used. The process is simple: combine ground coffee with very cold, filtered water and let it sit for at least 8 hours and no more than 24 hours. This method needs a longer brew time because there’s no heat. Once your coffee is done, be sure to strain it to get rid of the excess grounds.
Once you’ve completed this then follow celebrity chef Maria Liberati’s recipe for a creamy elegant coffee milkshake here: https://www.marialiberati.com/2016/09/29/happy-coffee-day-and-a-coffee-milkshake-recipe/. For the adults, add some Bailey’s cream or Kahlua to give your milkshake the kick it needs.
Luckily, someone thought of an amazing idea to combine coffee and milkshakes, so we can enjoy this refreshing holiday!
