Serious kitchen injuries are more common than you think. Sharp knives, open flames, hot pans, and slippery floors all pose the potential for serious and even life-threatening injuries. When working in the kitchen, be sure to take appropriate measures to keep yourself safe.

Be Careful With Anything Hot

Most people have experienced minor burns when briefly touching a hot pan. But more serious burns can occur if you aren’t careful and prepared. Boiling water or hot grease can cause severe burns that require hospitalization in some cases. Fire is also a constant danger.

To prevent burn injuries, always turn pot handles inward so they aren’t easily bumped. Use oven mitts rather than potholders to provide full coverage for your hands and wrists. Supervise children carefully, and avoid wearing loose clothing that could drift into a flame.

Handle Knives Properly

Proper handling of knives is the best way to prevent cuts to fingers and hands. It seems counterintuitive, but sharp knives are actually safer than dull ones. A dull blade requires more force and can lead to slipping and accidentally stabbing. It’s also important to use nonslip cutting boards.

When cutting, hold the knife by the handle only. Keep the fingers of your other hand curled inward. Concentrate on what you’re doing, and avoid distractions like conversation or TV. Make sure others in the kitchen are aware of knives in use. When holding a knife, you should always communicate when you move throughout the kitchen.

Use Appliances Safely

Many kitchen injuries are caused by misuse of appliances. Any appliance with a moving blade, such as a food processor or blender, should only be used with the lid on. If something becomes stuck in the blade, turn the appliance off and unplug it before clearing the obstruction.

Toasters and toaster ovens are also a hazard and can cause burns or electric shocks if not handled properly. Avoid sticking forks or knives inside the toaster slots to pry out stuck bread or bagels.  Keep the toasters free from crumbs and clean them only when they are unplugged.

To avoid kitchen injuries, you must be aware of the dangers and learn safety procedures in handling anything that’s hot, sharp, electric, or motorized. Keep your kitchen well stocked with safety items like oven mitts and the proper utensils. Most of all, take your time and focus on what you’re doing.
