How to Avoid Plumbing Issues in Your Kitchen

Plumbing issues in the kitchen can be a major pain. You almost always have to hire a plumber to address the issue, and you may not be able to use your kitchen sink for a while. Luckily, there are a lot of things you can do to prevent kitchen plumbing issues.

Clean Them on Occasion

Keeping your drains clean will help prevent back-up and clogs. An easy way to clean your drains is by using one part baking soda and two parts white vinegar. Put the baking soda down the drain first, then slowly pour the vinegar down the drain and watch as the mixture begins to bubble. About 15 minutes later, rinse it with boiling water. Completing this cleaning process regularly will help keep your drains clear of any built-up waste.

Watch What You Put Down Your Drain

Being careful about what you put down your kitchen drain is another important way to take care of it. You should never put cooking grease or oil down your kitchen drain. Oil does not mix well with water, so instead of going all the way down your pipes, they tend to build up inside of them. Even if you’re careful, grease and fat can build up in your drain. Keep an empty jar or can underneath your skin to pour grease and oil into. Make sure all grease and oil have been removed from pans before washing them.

Clean Your Garbage Disposal

Another good way to protect your kitchen pipes is to clean your garbage disposal. Over time, the knives of your garbage disposal can catch built-up food waste which can cause it to smell bad and not work as well. A great way to clean your garbage disposal is with citrus peels. Put the peels down the drain, and run the water when you turn on the garbage disposal for a fresh citrus scent. Grinding ice in your disposal sharpens the blades of the knives in a safe and gentle way. You should also pull out the splash guard and clean it to remove all food materials. Keeping your disposal clean will prevent food clogs in your drain.

The good news about plumbing issues is that they are almost always avoidable. By taking care of the drain and garbage disposal in your kitchen, you will ensure that there won’t be any build-up of food or oil. Having clean and clear pipes will help you have a well-maintained and well-working kitchen.
