How to Avoid Bad Smells in Your Kitchen

The kitchen is often thought of as the heart of a home. It’s where memories are made and delicious food is prepared and consumed. Of course, the thing about food is that it has the potential to cause some pretty awful smells. If you want the chance to really enjoy your kitchen, you need to know how to avoid the stomach-churning scents that can sometimes invade a kitchen.

Use Natural Cleaners

Heavy duty chemical cleaners have their own place and time. They tend to come with equally powerful stenches, however, which can make them less optimal for use in the kitchen, especially on surfaces that are used for preparing food. Instead, you can use natural cleaners made from lemon, vinegar, and salt to help you keep your kitchen clean and smelling fresh at the same time.

Dispose of Food Properly

In many instances, bad smells are the result of food that hasn’t been disposed of properly. You might think putting the remnants of your meals down your drain and into the disposal is fine, especially since you can always run the disposal to shred the food into smaller pieces that you would think won’t cause trouble for your pipes. That’s not always the case though. Putting things down your drain that don’t belong can cause plumbing issues in your kitchen. That can lead to some pretty unpleasant smells over time. Never put fats, oils, or grease down your drain.

Rotate Your Food

Food that you’ve cooked and the scraps that get left over aren’t the only ways food can make your kitchen smell bad. Pretty much every food will go bad at some point. Fresh produce goes bad faster than things like uncooked grains. You can prevent food that’s going bad from making your kitchen stink by practicing first-in, first-out, which means that you use the oldest products first. You may also find that creating a weekly meal plan to use based on what your oldest ingredients are may help you go through them before they go bad.

No one feels like eating in places where it smells like something’s crawled into the corner and died. The best thing you can do to combat bad smells in the kitchen is to take a proactive approach to stench prevention. That way you and everyone in your home will be free to enjoy a fresh smelling kitchen and the food that comes out of it.
